Most adults should have an eye exam every one to two years, depending on age, vision needs, and eye health. Children, seniors, and patients with certain conditions may need exams more often. We’re always happy to recommend the right schedule for you and your family.

OHIP covers eye exams for children and youth under 20, as well as adults 65 and older. Some medical eye conditions may also be covered. Our team is happy to help you understand what’s covered and answer any questions before your visit.

Children should have their first eye exam in infancy, ideally between 6 and 12 months of age. Additional exams are recommended around age 3, and again before starting school. Regular eye exams help ensure proper visual development and can detect issues early, even before a child shows any signs of vision problems. We’re experienced in caring for young eyes and make every visit comfortable and positive for both children and parents.

A comprehensive eye exam typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes. We take the time to thoroughly assess your vision and eye health—without ever making you feel rushed.

A comprehensive eye exam is about more than just updating your glasses prescription. Your optometrist will take time to review your medical and eye health history, talk with you about any vision concerns, and assess how clearly you see both up close and at a distance. The exam also evaluates how your eyes focus and work together, measures eye pressure as part of glaucoma screening, and includes a detailed examination of the health of your eyes, including the retina and optic nerve. We use modern diagnostic technology to ensure your exam is thorough and comfortable, and we always take the time to explain our findings and answer your questions.

Yes. A comprehensive eye exam can often detect early signs of eye disease and other health conditions before symptoms appear. Your optometrist can identify or monitor conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, dry eye disease, and various retinal conditions. In some cases, changes in the eyes may also point to underlying health concerns like diabetes or high blood pressure. Regular eye exams are an important part of maintaining both your vision and your overall health.
